Al & Cindy Wanek
History
In the early years of Alan and Cindy Wanek’s marriage, Alan bought and renovated rental property, accumulating sixty units at one point. In addition, they had both worked in furniture retailing since their teen years, and then went on to management and ownership of a large furniture, appliance and flooring business. During those years, they served as a supplier for many other builders. In addition, Cindy spent more than 20 years in custom decorating for residential and commercial clients.
After closing the furniture store, it was a natural transition for both Alan and Cindy to get involved in the custom building business. For many years, they participated in building projects at the end of the process, and had to help minimize mistakes that had been made by others. They wanted to put that knowledge to work and avoid making any of those mistakes in the first place! They’ve had excellent response to their homes and they believe that’s the reason why.
Some of the special features in their homes that set them apart from the rest include architectural shingles, maintenance free exteriors, special built in electronics such as TVs in master bath areas, big screen home theaters in great rooms, all major appliances, true whirlpool tubs, insulated garages, drain tile with sump pumps, deluxe custom cabinets with under cabinet lighting, glass display units, roll-out shelving, designer moldings, trims, finishes and hardware. They also include Pella brand windows, premium floor trusses, premium tile and wood flooring, designer tile and wall paint applications, full sod and sprinklers, extensive use of solid surface sinks and countertops, designer faucets and light fixtures.
Alan and Cindy try to “lead” rather than “follow” with their designs, within limits. Ultimately, they are interested in harmony--harmony with the existing neighborhood, harmony with their prospective client’s lifestyle, furnishing tastes and of course, their purchasing power.
Philosophy
Alan & Cindy Wanek’s long term vision for Sherlock Homes is consistent, but controlled, growth. They are meticulous about quality and insist on hands-on, daily involvement in every project. Their true long-term vision is to leave behind a legacy of quality custom built homes. What they love about this business is the satisfaction of taking an empty lot and creating a beautiful house that becomes a family’s home.
The Waneks, through their work in the home furnishings industry, have traveled extensively in the U.S. and outside the country. Wherever they go, they still make it a point to tour historic homes and public buildings for their own enjoyment and for ideas. They keep up on the market by attending plenty of open houses of new homes for sale whenever possible. They read numerous publications and books on the subject and scan plan books. They also find that some of the reality TV shows depicting home makeovers can be a good source of information about public reaction to design ideas.
Alan and Cindy are both graduates of the University of Nebraska. Alan majored in business and Cindy in Journalism. Alan has been in business his entire life and Cindy has crossed over from broadcasting work to business endeavors.
